Description

Three houses, likely dating back to the 18th century or earlier, were subdivided in the mid-19th century into shops and houses, and later combined into two commercial properties. The building consists of a two-story, three-cell, L-shaped block facing west, with a long rear range backing onto Little Lane to the north. The construction is timber-framed with roughcast and dark weatherboarding on the north walls facing Little Lane, and red brick casing on the west front and the south end of the street-facing range. Slate roofs cover the building, with the street-facing range having a hipped roof.

The west front features a central chimney positioned a third from the north end, and a former south gable chimney. The 19th-century west front has three pairs of upper openings; originally, there was one blank opening and one sash window for each house, along with a door and a window on the ground floor. This original arrangement remains at No 70. No 68 has four sash windows, with a 20th-century shop window on the ground floor. The rear of the building retains 18th-century flush 2-light casements, one with leaded glazing and an iron casement. A low, two-story, slated, roughcast link connects to a 19th-century building also featuring casement windows and a plank door. The rear wing consists of two sections containing two late 18th-century houses, each with two windows on each floor and a central door. The left-hand house has Yorkshire sliding casement windows and a four-panel flush beaded door. The doors are sheltered by flat hoods supported by shaped brackets. The building is included in the list for group value.
