Description

This is a house, now used as a shop, likely dating to the 17th century or earlier. It was renovated in the late 18th century and extended to the rear in the 19th century as a Post Office sorting office, connecting to an 18th-century tannery building. The building is timber-framed. The front is plastered, while the rear wing is weatherboarded above a brick plinth. The roofs are steeply tiled, except for the south end of the rear wing, which has corrugated sheeting.

It’s an L-shaped building facing west. The left side of the front has a projecting, jettied section that runs parallel with the street. A two-story rear wing leads to a two-story and basement former tannery. A moulded eaves cornice, a moulded entablature at the upper floor level, and a low stucco plinth feature on the front. There is one window in each section on each floor, with an entrance in the middle. A large, flush box sash window with 4/4 panes is in the jettied section; a triple flush sash window is in the upper part on the right. Smaller shop windows are below. The recessed glazed front door replaces an earlier doorway, which had panelled pilasters with elongated brackets and a guttae, topped by an entablature that projects forward. The close-studded end frame of the former two-story timber-framed building to the south is now attached to the south end. The jettied section has heavy, jowled posts. The tannery building’s interior has exposed heavy softwood framing and intact wooden mechanisms for adjusting hinged side-louvres.
