Description
The Black Bull Public House is an inn that dates back to the 16th century or earlier, with a rear extension added in the 19th century and alterations made to the front in the early 20th century. It features a timber frame with a half-timbered upper section above a ground floor that is made of red brick and rendered. The rear extension is also constructed of red brick, and the building has a steep old red tile roof.
The structure is two stories tall, with a cellar and attic, and has a front that is four windows long, facing west and extending over a carriageway at the northern end that leads to a yard. There is an internal gable chimney at the southern end and a central chimney located a quarter of the way from the north. The building has a 4-bay framed structure with a staircase that rises at the rear of the second bay from the south.
On the front, the first floor features casement windows with small panes in the heads of each light, and large bracketed oriel windows flank the entrance, which is accessed by two steps. A gabled dormer rises above the eaves. Inside, the ground floor boasts exposed heavy flat joists and axial beams, with a moulded beam in the middle bay. There is an elaborate late 17th-century straight staircase with balusters, tall carved finials on the newel posts, and similar brackets on the posts next to the stair. The roof is a clasped-purlin design with curved wind-braces. The inn was known as The Horseshoes until 1727.
