Description
No 4 High Street is a house that has been converted into a shop. It dates back to the 16th century and was altered in the 17th century. The building features a timber frame set on a low stucco plinth and is covered with roughcast and a steep old red tile roof. It is a small, 3-bay, 2-storey structure facing west, with a 18th-century or later external gable chimney on the north side. There is a lower extension to the south that crosses the former carriageway.
The street-facing side has three small, 2-light, flush casement windows on the upper floor. On the ground floor, there are two small 19th-century shop windows flanking a central door that has a flat hood supported by shaped brackets. To the right of the door, there is another 2-light casement window.
Inside, the building retains exposed timbers, including the close-studded front wall on the first floor, straight braces supporting the cambered tie-beams of the concealed side-purlin roof, jowled posts, a heavy bracket supporting the cross-beam on the ground floor, a chamfered axial floor beam in the middle bay, and an edge-halved scarf joint in the front wallplate with bridled butts.
