Description
Finlay House is a house dating from the early 18th century, with its interior altered in the early 19th century. It features a timber frame that is roughcast, along with a contemporary red brick front. The house has steep old red tile roofs and is designed in a T-plan, facing east with a rear wing that extends as a kitchen wing and a stair tower at the southern angle of the front wing.
The facade is ambitious, showcasing giant order pilasters on a high plinth, a bold moulded wooden eaves cornice, and an interrupted floor band. There are three box-sash upper windows that are slightly recessed, each with moulded architraves and 6/6 panes. On the ground floor, there are two similar windows, which were restored in the 20th century with rubbed brick arches. The entrance features a six-panel half-glazed door that is accessed by two stone moulded steps, accompanied by a rectangular margin-light fanlight and a timber doorcase with corner-shafts that have rings. A broad flat hood is supported by large shaped brackets. The rear parts of the house have similar sash windows, but the attics are lit by two-light casements.
