Description

The remains of a window and wall are located near the inner edge of the moat southeast of Rye House Gatehouse. This fragment of wall includes the jambs and part of the head of a window, likely architectural features from Rye House dating to around 1443. These elements were repositioned around 1868 by Henry Teale as part of his public pleasure garden. The wall is constructed from limestone with some brick, rendered on the eastern face. It features deep chamfered jambs and mullion bases, along with a cusped head to the pointed arch of a three-light Decorated period Gothic window. There are rebates for glazing and supporting ironwork. The western face of the wall is faced in stone. This site is part of a Scheduled Ancient Monument.
