Description

The Rye House Public House is an early 19th-century building, possibly originating from an earlier period, with the eastern wing dating to around 1868. The main structure was largely rebuilt in 1980, incorporating elements of the old facade. It features roughcast walls and gabled red tile roofs, standing two stories tall with a one-story eastern wing. The northern front facing the road has five windows. The eastern wing projects significantly and includes a tarred brick plinth, a shallow bow window (which has been renewed), a small lean-to porch, and a pierced and faceted Gothic bargeboard. A terra cotta winged dragon adorns the ridge, and there is a gabled square bay window with a similar bargeboard on the western side.

Flanking the central hooded door are large early 19th-century bow-fronted, two-story cast iron Gothic windows, which were originally from a house in Cheshunt and were added to the then Kings Arms Inn by Henry Teale around 1870 when he was developing the site as a pleasure garden for Londoners. The current name of the pub dates from around 1904. The projecting bargeboarded gables over each window feature identical 19th-century large circular plaques depicting a naturalistic scene in relief of tributes being offered to Britannia, with a lion couchant. The windows are flush sash with glazing bars (renewed), and there is a narrow cast iron slot window with octagonal lights above the door. At the rear, there is a two-story early 19th-century block that is white weatherboarded with a slate roof. Additionally, 16th and 17th-century stained glass has been reset in the heads of the front bow windows.
