Description
The remains of a window and wall are located near the inner edge of the moat west of the Rye House Gatehouse. This fragment of wall includes the jambs and sill of a window, likely architectural features from Rye House dating to around 1443. These elements were repositioned around 1868 by Henry Teale as part of a public pleasure garden. The wall is constructed of limestone with some brick, rendered on the west face but stone faced on the east. The Gothic stone window features deep chamfered members, with rebates for glazing and iron supports. Below the sill on the east side, there is a stone moulded string course adorned with ball ornaments in a hollow chamfer. This site is part of a Scheduled Ancient Monument.
