Description
Waterboard Cottage is a house built in 1882 for the New River Company as an engineer's residence connected to the Rye Common Pumping Station. The house is constructed of yellow brick with buff gauged arches and stone brackets to the eaves, and has a hipped red tile roof. It is a two-story building facing east, with a symmetrical three-window front. The upper floor has recessed sash windows, with two panes to each window, flanking a central blind recess. A heavy projecting moulded cornice runs along the floor level. A projecting, round-arched doorway with a radial fanlight is centrally positioned. Wide, segmental arched recesses on each side contain two narrow, round-headed windows. A substantial eaves overhang is supported by moulded, stepped brackets, paired at the corners. A narrower rear wing matches the style of the main building, and projecting gable chimneys are present. The house contributes to a group setting with the Pumping Station.
