Description

St Margarets Station is a railway station, platform, and canopy built around 1843 for the opening of the Hertford Branch of the Northern and Eastern Railway. The station is constructed of yellow brick and features hipped slate roofs. It has a long, tall, E-shaped, single-storey building that faces east, with small projecting wings and a boldly projecting central portico leading to a raised entrance. Each wing has a triplet of narrow round-headed sash windows, while there are two wider round-headed windows on each side of the central area. The building has a low plinth and a deep impost band that links the openings, with arches that project from the face of the band and keystones in the higher central arch of the wings, which project further. Under the eaves, there is a small wooden moulded cornice. The open front of the portico is spanned by a beam with a panelled face and features large arched openings on each side. At the southern end, there is an attached square pyramid-roofed building from the same period that shares similar architectural features. On the west side, there is an attached brick revetted platform that is ramped at one end. The platform is covered by a 5-bay canopy supported by posts, which are adorned with decorative cast iron brackets and frilly edging made of fretted vertical boarding.
