Description
Nos 37 and 39 on High Street are two adjoining houses located in Stanstead Abbots village. No 37, which is now a shop, dates back to the 17th century and has a uniform brick parapeted front added in the 19th century. The building was largely rebuilt behind its facade in 1982. It features a timber-framed and weatherboarded structure with a steeply pitched gabled roof covered in modern red tiles. The house is two stories tall with two wide-spaced windows. The front is roughcast with a plinth, deep panelled eaves band, and a straight parapet. There is a shop window to the left of the door and a domestic window to the right. A large central chimney made of red brick has been rebuilt at the top in yellow brick. At the rear, there is a two-story range in yellow brick from the 19th century that runs parallel to the main building.
No 39 is shorter and has a continuation of the roughcast brick front, also two stories tall with two windows and a central door. Its roof has been altered to match that of No 37, and it features two-light leaded metal casements. Together, these buildings are prominent on the High Street, with No 39 included for its group value with No 35.
