Description

Walford House is an early 18th-century house, with some alterations made in the early 19th century and a mid-19th-century brick range added to the rear. It is situated in Stanstead Abbots village. The house is constructed of grey brick, faded in the early 19th century, with a parallel range of red brick at the rear. A single-storey, red-tiled brick outhouse is attached to the west gable. The roof is steeply pitched, covered in old red tiles, with stone copings to the parapet and gables.

The house is two storeys and three windows wide. The central entrance features a six-panelled, flush beaded door within a moulded doorframe, and is covered by a traceried fanlight under a round arch. An unusual curved-topped lean-to canopy, with fretwork trim on cusped brackets bearing pierced spandrels, sits above the door. Recessed sash windows have gauged flat arches and painted stone sills. The window above the door has six panes; the other windows on both floors are triple sash windows with six panes per sash.

The house is set back from the street and is approached by 19th-century red brick gatepiers with Portland stone cappings, cast iron railings, and gates.
