Description

Willowthorpe is a house built in the later 19th century, specifically said to have been constructed in 1864 by Italian contractors. The building is made of mass concrete with a stucco finish that is lined to resemble ashlar. It features gabled slate roofs and is two stories tall with three windows facing south. The house has an H-plan layout with parallel gabled wings, a narrower gabled center, and a one-story parapetted porch.

The windows are recessed sash types, with a rectangular bay window and a canted bay window flanking the porch on the ground floor, and an additional canted bay on the left return. The porch parapet displays the coat of arms of the Ker family, along with the motto "PRO CHRISTO ET PATRIA DULCE PERICULUM." The gables are adorned with bargeboards, and there are one-story outbuildings at the rear. This 19th-century stucco villa is set in its own grounds by the riverbank and has seen little alteration, making it of special interest for its early use of mass-concrete construction.
