Description
Hockerrill Residential School is a former Church of England schoolmistresses' residential college, built in 1852 by Joseph Clarke. It is an example of Tudor Gothic style architecture. The building is constructed of diaper patterned red brick with stone dressings around the doors and windows and has old red tile pitched roofs with Hampton Court style brick chimneys. The original layout was quadrangular, however it extends south in 1 1/2 storeys. The west garden front, formerly the entrance, has five windows with a central Tudor doorway set beneath a traceried, crenellated oriel window that retains its original latticework, and has a split level roof with stone coping. The ground floor windows are mullioned and transomed, while the first floor has single dormitory lights.
The main south front, now the entrance, has seven windows, with three on the east side, which represents a 1924 addition with a modern porch. A central projecting single-story chapel was added in 1878, also by J Clarke, built in Early English style with four lancet windows to the sides and a triad on the east gable end. The west gable of the chapel features ornamental tiles and a wooden belfry. Inside the chapel is an open trussed rafter roof, along with a stone sedilia, piscina, and book recess, and an organ loft over the west end.
The interior of the quadrangle features a traceried tie beam ceiling in the former assembly hall on the west side. A late 19th century room in the north-east corner has a large stone Perpendicular style fireplace. Late 19th century additions are present on the north-east of the quadrangle, along with modern cloisters.
