Description

The Church of All Saints, built in 1936 by S E Dykes Bower, is a prominent structure located on Stansted Road. It is constructed from rough limestone with ashlar dressings. The west front facing the road features a tall, broad central tower topped with a steep, hipped red tile roof. Below the tower are three excessively tall lancet windows, with two smaller ones above and an eaves cornice. The flanking single-storey aisles have doors set within cinquefoil arches, and there are buttresses at the angles and along the aisle walls. The front is approached by steps and walls.

Inside, the church has a tall nave consisting of four bays, supported by giant drum piers and pointed arches, with a coffered wagon roof. The chancel, which has no aisles, features an east rose window with flowing tracery and two south windows with paired plain lancets beneath a multifoil oculus. There are four trefoiled sedilia, and the aisles are adorned with paired lancets and steep coffered roofs.

Additionally, there is a 19th-century open timber lych gate at the southwest corner of the churchyard, which has a cruciform shingle roof and traceried side panels. This church is part of the original 1851 structure that was destroyed by fire in 1935. It significantly enhances the eastern aspect of the town.
