Description

The Barn and Hovel at Bancroft Farm, located 25 meters to the northwest of Broom Manor, date back to the early 17th century. The roof of the hovel was renewed in the late 19th century above the tie-beams. The structures feature timber frames set on tarred red brick plinths, with weatherboarding that is also tarred, and steeply pitched roofs now covered in black corrugated iron.

The barn is a tall, three-bay structure with a gabled porch in the middle bay on the west side and double doors on the east side. It has jowled posts and long curved braces supporting the tie-beams of the clasped-purlin roof, which includes inclined queen posts. The walls feature curved tension braces and a face-halved bladed scarf joint in the east wallplate over the post. The slender scantling of studs does not include a mid-height rail.

The lower hovel on the north end, which is three bays long, now interconnects with the barn. This hovel also has jowled posts and straight braces to the tie beams. Originally open to the east, the openings have since been glazed. The buildings form a picturesque traditional group, particularly when viewed from the west.
