Description
Daneswood is a house dating circa 1910-20, built in an eclectic Arts and Crafts style by W Woodward for his own residence. The house is constructed of painted stone with a red brick base and string course, and has a Westmorland slate roof with some imitation half-timbering. It is arranged as a "L" plan, with a one-and-a-half storey service wing to the northeast. The windows are leaded casements of varying sizes. The southwest wing features an external mullioned chimney stack and imitation half-timbering over the front door. A two-storey canted window bay with small-pane, mullioned, and transomed casements is located on the southeast gable end. On the garden side, there is a three-bay Tuscan loggia, two tall mullioned stacks, and a similar two-storey canted window bay on the northwest side.
The interior is a very good imitation of the 17th century, with details copied from Sidehill House. The ground floor features scratch-moulded panelling throughout. One southeast room has a deep fireplace nook with imitation Jacobean and mid-17th century plasterwork, incorporating a central painted panel. This room also has diagonal and scrolled brackets to the lintel and floor beams. The staircase well has both vertical and horizontal balusters. Upstairs rooms have open timbered roofs and decorative plasterwork fireplaces.
The garden is influenced by Edwin Lutyens and includes an imitation 18th-century wrought iron gate near the northeast corner.
