Description
The Cat and Fiddle is a house located along a track 1250 meters from Pelham Road in Braughing, dating from the early 17th century with alterations made in the later 17th century. It features a timber frame on a brick plinth and is plastered. The house has a steep half-hipped roof covered with pantiles and is one and a half storeys high, designed in a two-unit, lobby-entry layout with a central chimney facing south.
A large red brick chimney with conjoined square shafts is positioned one-third from the west end. The entrance consists of a plank door set in a broad frame, topped with a small flat hood supported by brackets, located in front of the chimney. There is a lean-to roofed dormer to the right of the stack, and the house has several two-light windows: one in the dormer, one below it, another to the left of the door, and upright narrow windows at each end. An attic window is present in the east gable.
The interior includes separate straight stairs at each end, a brick oven with an iron door in the kitchen fireplace, and axial chamfered beams. The small parlour at the east end features chamfered and stopped joists along with a bar-stopped axial beam. Tension braces are visible in the north wall, and wind-braces support the clasped-purlin roof. The western part of the roof was rebuilt in the later 17th century using butt-purlin construction. This building was formerly known as The Cat and Fiddle public house.
