Description
The Wren Monument in St Mary's churchyard, located 25 meters to the west-southwest of the east gate to the churchyard in Braughing village, is a memorial cross and enclosure dating from around 1898. It features bronze plates, likely over a wooden structure, and is surrounded by an oak-railed enclosure that includes a memorial plaque. The monument consists of a slender, tapering standing cross approximately 2 meters high, facing west. The front displays repousee decoration in the Arts and Crafts style. The buttressed shaft rises from a swept square base, which has a plinth and corner turrets. The head of the cross is topped with a deep semi-cylindrical bronze hood. The low enclosure is made of oak posts and rails, with a gabled central framed panel on the west side, about 1 meter high, featuring repousee inscriptions dedicated to Walter Wren (1834-1898) and other family members. The gabled top of the panel is capped with bronze.
