Description
Church Cottages, located in Westmill village, are two houses that date back to the 17th century or earlier. The building features a timber frame with roughcast and a panelled stucco sill, topped by a steep old red tile roof that is half-hipped at the west end. Originally, it was a three-unit house with a central chimney from the 17th century, a third chimney located towards the east end, and an external gable chimney at the west end.
The structure is two stories high and includes a timber-framed rear wing at the west end, which is partly faced in red brick and was sometimes used as a smithy. The roof has a high-set side-purlin design, with the wallplate end supported by an elaborately shaped bracket at the northeast corner.
The north front is divided into two 18th-century houses, each with a symmetrical arrangement around two identical doors. House number 1 features casement windows, including two old 2-light leaded windows with iron casements on the first floor. House number 2 has three flush box sash windows with 8/8 panes and architraves on the first floor, along with similar windows flanking the door. Both houses have six-panel flush beaded doors, each with a moulded surround, a swelled frieze, a projecting cornice, and a swept metal hip above. There is also an 18th-century small central chimney just behind the ridge, along with an additional flue built onto the east side of the old central chimney, which has a triangular pilaster on its broad north and south faces.
