Description

New Street House is a farmhouse that has been converted into a house and farm office. It dates from the early 18th century, with an eroded stone panel over the door that is said to bear the date '1749', although the house is stylistically from around 1700. The building was extended to a square plan after 1843 for the Duke of Wellington. It is constructed of red brick with random blue headers, while the extension is made of lighter red brick. The roofs are covered with old red tiles.

The house is a formal L-shaped structure with two storeys and attics, facing east, and features a rear wing that looks out onto the garden to the south. There are matching two-storey 19th-century additions in the angle, completing the square plan. The east front is symmetrical with five windows, a chamfered plinth, a floor band, and a central panelled door with a plain fanlight set under a segmental brick arch. Above the door is a date panel, and the windows are flush box sash types with moulded frames and 6/6 panes, featuring margin lights on the ground floor sashes, all under segmental brick arches.

On the south front, there are two semi-octagonal one-storey bay windows from the 19th century, which have decorative tiles set in the parapet with roll-moulded coping above arched French windows. To the west, there is a conservatory. The north front is asymmetrical, featuring gable parapets and a door at the north end of the east range, which has a pilastered Tuscan doorcase with a dentil frieze and a modillion cornice supported by small brackets. The name "New Street House" comes from the adjacent road, which was known as New Street in the 18th century.
