Description

Town Farm House, located on the corner of Stortford Road, is a farmhouse that has been converted into a house. It dates back to the late medieval period and originally featured an open hall. In the late 16th century, it was floored and a chimney was inserted. The front is made of brick, and the roof is slate, which is said to have been installed in 1789. The building has a timber frame that is plastered, with red brick casing on the south front and the front half of the west end. It has a steeply pitched hipped roof that is now covered with slate.

The house has two storeys, with an east crosswing and a former open hall of unusual proportions, which was heightened to two storeys throughout in the 16th century or later. The hall chimney was rebuilt in the 18th century, and an external chimney was added to the east gable around 1789 to heat the parlour east of the hall. The south front features three windows with brick detailing, including pilasters, a floor band, and a moulded parapet cornice. The recessed sash windows have 2/2 panes and are topped with flat gauged arches and louvred shutters. To the left of centre is a six-panel moulded door with an elliptical blind fanlight and a 19th-century round-headed porch. There are external gable chimneys on both the east and west sides.

Inside, the framing of the north wall is exposed on the staircase, and the east wing features a cambered tie-beam and chamfered arched braces. The hall fireplace has moulded wooden jambs and a cambered lintel, which likely date back to an earlier timber-framed chimney.
