Description

Mutfords is a house built around 1719 for Samuel Mason, with a rear extension added around 1900. It is constructed of red brick, featuring roughcast and tile hanging on the rear extension, and has steep old red tile roofs. This early Georgian house is situated on an ancient moated site and faces south. It has two storeys, attics, and a cellar, with a symmetrical front that includes a rendered plinth, a floor band, and a moulded wooden eaves cornice. The building is five windows wide and has three hipped dormers.

The windows feature rubbed brick flat arches on each floor, with a round-headed taller window above the central door that lights the staircase. The windows are primarily flush box sashes with small panes, although some 19th-century 2/2 sashes remain. The central entrance has a six-panel raised and fielded door, framed by a simple wooden moulded doorcase that includes a swelled frieze and a dentilled triangular pediment.

Inside, the west room on the ground floor has fielded panelling and a moulded cornice, while the east room features a panelled dado and ovolo moulded folding shutters. The staircase has a cut string, barleysugar twist balusters, a wreathed foot, and carved ends to the treads. The unusual plan has the staircase rising towards and being lit from the front wall, with a cellar located under the room that has a west gable fireplace, while the chimney of the east room backs onto the central stair hall.
