Description

Westmill Bury is a house located in Westmill village, built in the early 18th century, around 1710. It is constructed of red brick and features an old red tile roof. The main block has a double-pile plan, consisting of two storeys, a cellar, and attics, and is five windows wide, facing north and south. There are internal end-wall chimneys and a west wing with a three-room single-pile plan.

The house has three hipped dormers on each front, partially obscured by a brick parapet with a moulded band at the eaves level, which is mirrored at floor level. Both the north and south fronts are symmetrical, each featuring a central doorway and slightly recessed box sash windows with six-over-six panes set under segmental gauged arches. The doors are six-panel fielded types.

The north front includes a pilastered Tuscan doorcase with a full entablature and triangular pediment, while the south front, which faces the garden, has a fanlight and a Doric doorcase with fluted pilasters and an entablature adorned with triglyphs. Inside, there is a fine close string staircase with urn balusters and square newels. Fluted pilasters support an arch with a keystone from the hall to the staircase, and a similar archway with a double keystone leads to the south entrance from the garden. The rooms are paneled in pine, featuring two-panel doors, H-hinges, and moulded cornices.
