Description
The iron railings and entrance gates to Ware Cemetery were laid out in 1854 and constructed around 1855. The railings extend from Wengeo Lane around the apex of the site and along the south side of Westmill Road to the Lodge, which has been significantly altered and is not included in this listing. The gates are centrally located, facing east towards the junction of Westmill Road, Wengeo Lane, and Watton Road. They flank the driveway leading to the mortuary chapels.
The gates are made of cast iron and feature twin leaves in a Gothic style, with moulded cusped ogee trefoil heads and foliated poppy heads above the top rail. The gate piers are made of stucco-faced brick, featuring a plinth, a setback over a cyma recta roll moulding, recessed moulded lancet panels on the front face, and projecting moulded caps. The railings are set on cast-iron saddlebacks over dwarf walls made of yellow-brown stock brick. The uprights of the railings are similar in pattern to the gates, adorned with foliated poppy heads but lacking the traceried head below the top rail. Bracing is provided at intervals with short brick buttresses, cast-iron saddlebacks, and ogee-shaped braces. The railings in this location have finials shaped like miniature churches on moulded octagonal pedestals. These features are associated with the mortuary chapels and are included for their group value.
