Description

Bradby Hall, Gymnasium and workshops at Haileybury and Imperial Service College, built in 1887-1888 by Reginald Blomfield, is located 90 metres east of the Quad. Named after Dr. Bradby, who was Head Master for 15 years until 1883, this school building features red brick with stone dressings and steep red tiled gabled roofs.

The structure consists of a tall rectangular block with two and a half storeys, accessed by seven steps at the west gable end. At the eastern end, there is a lower two-storey cross-wing, and attached to this is a tall single-storey gymnasium block. The hall-block, designed in an elaborate Dutch Renaissance style, has seven bays and a prominent two-storey octagonal cupola at the centre of the roof. The sides are supported by buttresses with moulded offsets that rise to a brick cornice, with a central range of dormer windows above five panels. The windows are wooden, featuring mullions and transoms.

Large moulded stucco panels with inscriptions are located at the upper floor level, and the entrance is through a round-arched opening beneath a large stone balcony. The gabled parapet is adorned with stone balls and pilasters flanking the upper round-arched windows. Inside, the first-floor hall is timber-framed in Jacobean style, complete with arcaded galleries and an open timber roof, accessed by a staircase of similar design.

The simpler gymnasium block has a tall octagonal louvred cupola topped with an ogee lead cap. The north front entrance features five high-set three-light windows beneath a central window, with a moulded plinth and band at sill level, and a full entablature made of rubbed red brick. The roof has steep hipped tile slopes leading to the edges of a wide-span square roof, and there is a pedimented hood on moulded brackets above the three-panel double doors. The lower block has a rounded gable and three windows that link Bradby Hall to the west, with two tall round arches in a screen on the east side connecting to the laundry yard.
