Description

The Sparrows Herne Trust turnpike marker is likely from the early 19th century. It is a cast-iron post with a convex face that features the raised inscription ‘SPARROWS HERNE TRUST’. The marker is approximately 76 centimeters high and is located near, but not attached to, the wall of 352 High Street. It is situated next to a stone that indicates the pre-1972 boundary between the civil parishes of Berkhamsted and Northchurch. This marker was probably installed to designate the route of the turnpike for legal and maintenance reasons.
