Description

Southernwood is a house located on Trowley Hill Road, dating from the early 18th century for the front block, with rear wings likely from the 17th century. It features a late 20th-century front porch, door, and window frames. The building is constructed of sandy red brick in Flemish bond, with roughcast rear wings that are probably timber framed, and it has steep old red tile roofs, hipped on the front block.

The house is symmetrical, two storeys high with attics, and three windows wide, facing east. It has an ovolo moulded plinth course, a modillion brick eaves band, and a pronounced bellcast to the roof eaves. The central entrance is flanked by end chimneys, and there are two single-storey wings at the rear, with the southern wing being longer.

The front features tall windows with stained quoins around them, gauged flat arches that are dark stained, and cross windows with lattice leaded glazing. There is a county firemark present. The round-headed doorway has panelled reveals, a transom, and an impost with a continuous reeded band, leading to a 20th-century hardwood panelled door. The porch is supported by octagonal fluted posts. In the 1960s, the house had recessed sash windows with 6/6 panes and an 18th-century doorcase that included panelled reveals, an open triangular pediment on consoles, and a six-panel moulded door.
