Description

TA 14 NW BRANDESBURTON A 165 (north side) 5/11 The Manor House

  • II

House. Early C18 or earlier origins, remodelled early C19. Red brick in Flemish bond, colourwashed, slate roofs. 2 storeys and attics, 3 bays. Central direct entry plan with (originally) two rear wings, now infilled. Corner pilasters. Centre bay breaks forward slightly: ground floor has glazed door under fanlight with radial glazing in Tuscan porch flanked by narrow 10-pane windows. Tripartite sashes with glazing bars, under flat gauged brick arches, to right and to left. First floor: tripartite sashes to left and to right, 20-pane sash over door. Hipped roof and axial stacks to right and left rear wings. Three raised gables to rear. Interior: early C18 cut-string stair with barley-sugar and fluted balusters, ramped moulded handrail, and ramped dado rail over raised and fielded panelling. Early C19 fireplace to room to left of main elevation: early C19 doorcases throughout. A building in this position shown on a survey of 1732 is of the same plan as this house and is almost certainly to be identified with it.
