Description
Baldersley Cottage is a late 17th century or early 18th century building that was originally two houses purchased as almshouses in 1828 and sold in 1888, now combined into one. The front features brick infill inscribed 'AD 1791' along with various initials. The structure is timber-framed with red brick panels and has an old red tile roof. It is a long, two-storey house facing north, set back from the road in an excavated hollow, likely a former gravel pit. The exposed framing at the front displays a saltire pattern of bracing in the center. The house has four windows across the front, a large internal chimney in the middle, a large external chimney on the east gable, and a smaller external chimney on the west gable. There is a parallel rear extension and two-light flush casement windows with rectangular leaded glazing. A lean-to tiled porch is present, and there is a well at the west end of the house. The interior features unjowled posts, thin scantlings, squared joists, and stop-chamfered beams without stops. In 1828, Henry Day donated £20 to purchase the two copyhold tenements and gardens at Chipperfield Dell for use as almshouses.
