Description

This cob outbuilding, located approximately 25 meters south-south-west of Theobalds Park Farm, is likely a former calf shed or shelter shed dating from the late 17th century to early 18th century. It features cob walls and a hipped thatch roof with gablets, and has a rectangular plan with one storey. The front (west) elevation has a low cob wall flanked by double entries, and there is a blocked pitching door on the left (north) gable end. Inside, the building has split oak rafters supporting a 7-bay clasped purlin roof, which has been partly rebuilt but still retains three queen-post and queen-strut trusses. The floor is sunk about 60 centimeters below ground level. This outbuilding is a rare example of a pre-improvement type of cob (or battered clay) farm building in Hertfordshire.
