Description
The Shoe Box, located at 79 and 81 High Street in Hoddesdon, is a building that dates from the 17th century with a brick dated 1735 featuring the initials 'I.L.' and was raised to three storeys in 1842, marked by another brick with the initials 'J.H.'. It is constructed of red brick and has a low slate roof. The first floor has a moulded wooden floor band above four flush sash windows, which have been altered by modern shop fronts below. On the second floor, there are three 6/6-pane flush sash windows. The building features plain pilasters at the centre and on the north side, as well as plain eaves. There is evidence of an internal timber frame, and a 17th-century brick cellar is located on the north side (No 81). The building is included for its group value.
