Description

Marsh Farmhouse is a farmhouse dating from the mid-16th century, with extensions from the early 17th century and alterations from the 19th and 20th centuries. The building is timber-framed, with parts that are brick-faced and plastered, and has tiled roofs. The main part of the house consists of a block with three bays oriented roughly east-west, featuring a full-height partition between the western and middle bays from the mid-16th century. To the east, there is a two-bay crosswing added in the early 17th century. A short wing extends to the north from the western bay of the main block, also from the early 17th century.

Inside, there is an internal chimney stack at the junction of the main block and the crosswing, which has three diagonal shafts and dates to the late 16th century. There are also external stacks on the north wall of the main block and at the north gable of the crosswing. The farmhouse has two storeys, with attics only in the crosswing. The south elevation is faced in red brick in an early 19th-century Flemish bond style. On the ground floor, there are five 20th-century casement windows and a 19th-century door surround. The first floor features three 20th-century casement windows and another in the gable of the crosswing. A 20th-century porch has been added at the western (farmyard) entrance.

Internally, some timber framing is exposed, with jowled storey posts and curved tension bracing set into the studs of the upper crosswall in the east-west block. The ceiling beams are stop-chamfered, and there is an unglazed window with diamond mullions in the upper north wall of the main block. The roof features clasped purlins.
