Description
Barberry Cottage is a 18th-century building that was part of the service range of the manor house Fitzjohns, of which the rest was demolished around 1900. The cottage is constructed partly from timber framing and partly from brick, all of which is plastered, and it has a tiled roof. The structure consists of two bays aligned north-south, with a single-storey lean-to extension at the south gable and another single-storey extension to the southwest, both of which were added in the 20th century. The cottage is single-storey with attics beneath a gambrel roof. On the ground floor, there is a casement window, a plain door under a gabled hood, and a bay window with casements, all of which are from the 20th century. There is also a 20th-century casement window in a catslide dormer and a chimney at the north gable. A distinctive wooden bell turret sits on the roof, featuring saltire bracing, a pyramidal roof, and a finial. This building, notable for its bell turret, is depicted in drawings of Fitzjohns from 1857 in the Essex Record Office.
