Description

The Head Master's House and main block of the Grammar School, located on Cambridge Road in Newport, is a red brick building designed by W. E. Nesfield and constructed in 1878. The main block is single-storeyed and features a panelled parapet. It includes a north block with three windows, while the central section, which has one window, protrudes slightly and is adorned with brick pilasters and a pediment. A large central semi-circular headed window is flanked by double-hung sash windows with glazing bars. The roof is hipped and tiled, topped with an octagonal bellcote featuring an ogee roof and a metal weather-vane.

To the south, there is a block with four windows, which includes bar and transom casements with glazing bars, along with a central door that has a flat hood supported by brackets. The Head Master's House, which adjoins this block to the south, is two storeys tall with attics. The ground floor is constructed of red brick, while the upper storey is plastered and panelled. On the south side, there is a three-storey porch with upper storeys that oversail. The first storey of the porch features plaster pargetting. The roof is also hipped and tiled, with a coved eaves cornice, hipped dormers, and tall brick chimney stacks. There are later additions in a Neo-Georgian style.
