Description
Smarts is a cottage dating from the late 16th century. It is constructed with a timber frame and plastered exterior, featuring black weatherboarding up to the window sill height. The thatched roof slopes down to single-storey extensions at each end. The building has one storey and attics, with two eyebrow dormers on the front elevation. There are two small chimneys, one at each end of the ridge. The windows are 20th-century casements. Originally, it was an in-line open hall house that has been modified with an inserted floor and a late inglenook stack. The internal wall bracing includes both straight and cranked elements. At the east end, there is a solar or parlour, and a former diamond mullion window above the tie beam has been blocked.
