Description

This listing describes a row of almshouses with an attached school, which is now used as a library. The almshouses date from the 18th century, while the school was built around 1871. The buildings are constructed of red brick with some black headers and feature a red plain tiled roof that has ten gabled dormers, along with a larger gable on the left side above a tall window. There are four red brick chimney stacks. The structure is one storey with attics and has a window arrangement of 1:4:4:2, consisting of diamond leaded three-light casements with segmental arches, except for the tall window on the left which has a central mullion and three transoms. There are three pairs of vertically boarded doors with flat canopies above them. A large stone plaque above the central doors commemorates the foundation of a Trust by Sarah Barnard in 1777, which established the almshouses, schoolhouse, and a house for a school mistress. Additionally, there is a Sun Insurance Plaque.

To the left, the school built around 1871 is made of red brick and has a tiled roof with a gable facing the road. This section features pierced bargeboards and crenellated tiles along the ridge, along with a red brick chimney stack. The school is single storey and has a large window with a two-centred arch of three lights with Gothic heads on the gable end, as well as three windows with segmental heads on the right return and a vertically boarded door on the left return. A bell spire is located on the gable, topped with a cross. The school is included in the listing for its group value with the almshouses.
