Description

Three Cottages is a cottage that dates from the 13th or 14th century, originally built as a hall house with a crosswing. It has undergone later alterations and additions in the 20th century. The structure is timber framed and plastered, with weatherboarding on the left gable and red plain tiled roofs. There is a central chimney stack that was restored in the 20th century, featuring two diagonal shafts, and a red brick chimney stack on the left.

The main range is a single storey, while the left and right crosswings are one storey with attics; the right crosswing has an outshot. A central gabled porch is present, along with two brick buttresses to the left of the porch on the main range. The building features four two-light Gothic windows, one three-light Gothic window, and a single light Gothic window, all with pointed heads. The right crosswing has three leaded casement windows, and there are two similar three-light Gothic windows on the left return.

The porch has a nailed plank and muntin door, while the left side of the main range features an original lapped board door with hinges. Inside, the right crosswing displays halved arch braces on the walls and roof. There is an inserted floor and staircase with a newel, and a splayed scarf joint with vertical abutments to the top plate. The central range has widely spaced wall studs, with the original tie beams removed and 20th-century scissor bracing and buttresses added.
