Description
Carmelstead is a 17th-century timber-framed and plastered house, with alterations and additions from the 18th century. It is built on an L-shaped plan, with wings extending to the northwest and southwest. The house has two storeys. The upper storey is jettied on the southwest gabled end facing the street. The timber framing has been exposed on the upper storey of the northwest and southwest fronts, and at the internal angle, where there is also a coved plaster eaves cornice. The windows are mainly double-hung sashes with glazing bars, alongside some horizontal sliding sashes. The roof is tiled, featuring an original central chimney stack with two diagonally-set shafts on a square base. A gable is located at the northeast end of the southeast front. Group value context is considerable.
