Description
Lea Hall is a house likely dating from the 15th and early 17th centuries, located on Dunmow Road in Hatfield Heath. It features a timber frame, with parts plastered and parts exposed, and has gable-ended roofs covered with peg tiles. The building has a complex layout that includes at least two major construction phases and is two storeys high.
The north entrance front has a long rendered block to the east, positioned at right angles to the drive, which features two large rendered 17th-century stacks with thin pilaster-like strips. To the west is a large crosswing, probably from the 15th century, showcasing large curved down bracing and an exposed end of crown post roof. This section has early 17th-century bargeboards. Adjacent to this is a two-storey hall range that includes a two-storey porch with exposed framing, a display gable in the centre, and a significant crosswing at the west end. Both the hall and porch have original bargeboards on the front and rear, along with pendants and some altered frieze windows. The hall block features a large off-centre stack with pilaster strips.
There is a 20th-century extension to the west and rear of the building. The windows are 19th-century metal casements with leaded lights, set in ovolo moulded painted frames with timber label hoods. Inside, part of the frame is exposed, and there is some 17th-century panelling. The site is moated.
