Description
This is an outbuilding located 10 metres south-east of Number 72 on High Street in Saffron Walden, dating from the early 16th century. It features a timber-framed structure with rendered upper floors and a white boarded, exposed northern side at ground floor level. The building has a gabled roof covered with machine-made plain tiles, and the rear wall is partly constructed of English-bond brickwork.
The outbuilding has a well-crafted 4-bay timber frame with external bracing, including one exposed brace, jowled posts, and a side purlin roof that incorporates cranked wind bracing. Inside, all internal trusses appear to have arch braces, creating a large first-floor chamber. The front wall contains a jowled post aligned with the top plate, which may indicate the location of a large opening. The structure also features splayed halved and bridled scarf joints.
