Description

This is a cottage dating back to the 16th century, with later alterations. It is timber-framed and now rendered, with a gabled roof covered in plain tiles. At the rear is a catslide lean-to extension, timber-framed, with a flank wall constructed of gault brick. A stack is located near the centre of the ridge. The front of the cottage features a long, horizontal 12-pane window on the first floor, and two linked 12-pane double-hung sash windows on the ground floor. A doorcase with a moulded cornice and a panel above the door leads to the entrance, which has a 6-panel door with the two top panels glazed. Steps with wrought-iron handrails and bootscrapers lead to the front door. A double-hung sash window on the right side of the door illuminates the adjoining property at No. 76. The north-facing side of the cottage exhibits a pentise board supported by brackets, an iron street name plate reading 'Stock Yard', and a small window made of glass sheets. The original structure comprises one bay of a 16th-century house, evidenced by jowled posts and curved external wall braces on the south flank. There are remnants of a four-centred arched doorway in the south end of the front wall. The north wall was originally open, with an arched braced truss indicating that the house extended in that direction. An early 17th-century chimney stack was inserted, and a salt niche is visible in the rear wall of the fireplace opening.
