Description

No. 71 High Street is an Italianate villa built in the mid-19th century. It features yellow gault brick laid in Flemish bond with stucco dressings. The roofs are partly pyramidical and partly hipped, covered in slate. The building has three storeys with basements and a two-storey wing to the north.

The elevation includes modillioned eaves and a frieze in stucco. On the second floor, there are two segmental-headed double-hung sash windows, each with a central vertical glazing bar, and a flagpole mounted at the north end of this floor. A stucco string band transitions into the frieze for the two-storey part of the facade.

On the first floor, there are two 2-light plain double-hung sash windows with semicircular moulded arched surrounds, along with a similar single light window in the centre. The ground floor features a central stucco projecting doorcase with a moulded cornice, a semicircular arched entrance, and broad flanking pilasters. The door consists of six raised and fielded panels, topped by a semicircular fanlight, and is accessed by six stone steps. There are also two separate double-hung sash windows with segmental arched heads and eared stucco surrounds, three linked windows, and two areas with wrought-iron railings. Stacks are located on the north and south flank walls.
