Description

Three houses, located on Gold Street, Saffron Walden, were built in the late 17th century and subsequently rebuilt and refenestrated in the 19th century. The construction is timber-framed and plastered with brick, covered by a peg-tiled roof. The houses are rectangular in shape, with two storeys and an attic.

The east-facing front elevation has three windows and a three-door range. A 19th-century facade gable is located at the north end, featuring shaped bargeboards, and there are two ridge stacks. The ground floor is brick and rendered. Three 19th-century sash windows are present, alongside doors with four flush bead-moulded panels. The first floor is timber-framed and rendered, with three flush two-light casement windows, each with a central stile and 2x3 panes of glazing bars. A similar window is found in the attic gable, but with 2x2 panes.

The rear west-facing elevation is similar to the front, with brickwork below and timber framing above, and the same pattern of fenestration. There is no rear gable at the north end. A drawing of Gold Street from 1843, by T.C. Diblin, depicts the block without a facade gable but with a high carriageway in the same bay.
