Description
No. 40 Gold Street is a house and shop that dates back to the 16th century, with later alterations in the 19th and 20th centuries. The building is timber-framed and plastered, topped with a peg-tiled roof and featuring a red brick stack. It has a rectangular plan and stands two storeys high with a cellar.
The eastern elevation of the front is jettied, although the details are plastered over, and there are traces of ashlar lining. The ground floor has a modern double-fronted shop with plate glass windows and tiling below. The central doorway features reed moulded architraves, with a 20th-century door that includes a margin glazed upper light.
On the first floor, there are two similar 19th-century three-canted oriel bay windows that rest on plastered corbelled sills. These windows have sashes with glazing bars arranged in 1x4, 3x4, and 1x4 panes. A ridge stack is located at the southern end of the building.
