Description
Elizabeths Cottage is a house dating from around 1500, constructed with a timber frame and plastered exterior, featuring one storey and attics. It has a half-hipped peg tile roof that includes three small gabled dormers and two small red brick stacks along the ridgeline. The front of the cottage features a central 20th-century gabled peg tile porch and timber casement windows. This remarkable small open-hall house has a later inserted floor and stack. It consists of a two-bay hall with heavy arch braces supporting the tie beam, a crown post roof, remnants of an in-line parlour bay that is open to the roof, and a complete service/solar bay. An additional bay has been added at the eastern end. The framing is very complete, and the use of side purlins on jowled posts over the service/solar bay is a unique feature. The top plates of the hall exhibit halved and bridled scarf joints.
