Description
Tilty Mill is an early 18th-century watermill that was heightened in the 19th century, with most of its machinery dating from that later period. The building is constructed of red brick and features a tiled roof that is half-hipped with a gablet at one end, along with a weatherboarded lucam for hoisting sacks at the other end. It has two storeys and attics, with three windows, including one gabled dormer that has a boarded loading door below. The mill has cambered casements and a central doorcase.
Inside, the mill consists of two storeys, a bin floor, and an attic. The ground floor houses a high-breast shot waterwheel and a cast-iron pit wheel with wooden teeth that engage the cast-iron wallower. A wooden upright shaft supports a six-armed wooden compass great spur wheel that engages two iron stone nuts. There are three pairs of millstones equipped with wooden tentering gear, and a horizontal layshaft with a bevel gear connects to the pit wheel, forming part of an elaborate gear and belt drive for a third set of stones. All machinery is located within a boarded chamber, with the waterwheel positioned beyond it. There is also a meal bin.
On the first floor, three pairs of millstones remain intact with all their furniture, and a fourth small set of millstones is mounted on a cast-iron hursting in a corner. The iron top section of the upright shaft drives a crown wheel that connects to a layshaft with belt pulleys. Additional features include a roller crusher, a workbench with a vice and tools, and the gate gear for controlling the waterwheel below. The bin floor is fully partitioned into storage bins, and the sack hoist is driven by a belt from below. The attic floor has a central walkway providing access to the lucam and bin openings on either side, with the sack hoist, chain, and guide pulleys located in the peak of the roof, which is boarded inside.
