Description

This milestone, dating from the 19th century, is located on the western verge of the road, approximately 100 metres southeast of the junction with Cockaynes Lane. It has a square plan that tapers to a cut-off hipped top. The road-facing side is inscribed with "Parish of Elmstead," indicating that Elmstead parish is now to the north. The left side of the milestone shows the distance of 5 miles to Colchester, while the right side indicates 11 miles to Clacton on Sea. This milestone is part of a series of similar markers in the area.
