Description

The premises of the Orwell and Harwich Navigation Company, built in the late 19th century, consist of a ticket office and waiting room. The buildings are timber-framed and covered with white painted shiplap boarding, topped with lead roofs. There are two single-storey buildings connected by a flat-roofed link.

The ticket office is octagonal in shape, featuring corner pilasters and moulded rails at both the window sill and head level, with shiplap boarding infill. Each face of the ticket office has one double-hung sash window with small panes in the upper light, except for the entrance door on one side. The building has a wide eaves overhang, and the main roof is designed as a lead tent with a cupola that has arch-headed openings supported by balusters and topped with an ogee roof and iron weather-vane.

The waiting room is rectangular and similar in style, with small pane casements and a hipped lead roof. The east elevation has a pair of entrance doors, each with a glazed panel over a moulded panel. The rear of the building features plain boarded infill. The flat-roofed link block is also shiplap boarded. This structure replaced a more elaborate mid-19th century building that was two storeys tall.
