Description

A row of twelve cottages located on The Green in Mistley, dating to the late 18th century. They are believed to have been built as almshouses for Richard Rigby around 1778. The cottages are constructed of red brick, with some sections rendered, and feature gault brick dentilled eaves, a central decorative band, and pilasters separating each dwelling, except for numbers 1 to 5. They have red plain tiled roofs, with hipped ends. Number 1 has a separate hipped roof and chimney stack to its left return. Twelve ridge and six rear chimney stacks are present. The cottages have a twelve-window range of vertically sliding sash windows, and eleven mainly paired doors with pilasters between. The left return of number 1 features a three-window range and a recessed porch with a tiled dado. Some original four-panel doors with two lights and small-paned sash windows remain.
